June 2010 - Random Thoughts

6/3/2010 - The new wood sculpture is finished and installed in the gallery at the SMACenter in Virginia City - just in time for the opening on Saturday. It is truly over the top. The body is a wood container that a bunch of hors d'oeuvres came in. The round dot in the lid is an old camera lens. You can look through it to see the inside.

Wally's Sculpture

Inside

The inside contains many pictures of Wally as well as numerous shells. A light hangs near the top to light up the peeing boy when the cover is on.

6/5/2010 - Opening this afternoon at 4 pm. Hoping there is a great turnout. Maybe even some sales.

6/12/2010 - Well, I am back into the clay. Couldn't stand not getting dirty. 3 new baskets done and lots of ideas for more. The opening on the 5th was great - lots of sales and they are continuing. The sales are a very nice validation for the work. Maybe it won't be such a bad year after all. Intend to go like crazy until my knee surgery on July 12 and then have an enforced break from clay.

6/13/2010 - Lots of new ideas for baskets - obsessed with them. Sent 3 images to Vince Pitelka for feedback. Very nice to have someone out there who will do this as working in isolation can warp one's perspective. Vince has a keen eye for improvements to a piece.

6/17/2010 - Have 6 new baskets done, mostly dry and ready for the bisque kiln. Looked at Shaker baskets on the Internet and found those not well suited to the handbuilding techniques. Did find some Indian basket shapes that can be modified to work.

6/18/2010 - It has been a week of water leaks at my cottage next door to me. Very tired of these expensive problems.

6/23/2010 - Getting ready for camping this weekend in Clio - near Blairsden/Graeagle area in Northern California. Working on some small square dishes this week. The bottom is plain and the interior of the sides is patterned.

6/30/2010 - Last day of the month - 12 days to knee surgery. Seems to be a lot of things to finish up, clean up and get organized before surgery. Hope to do a little clay today - more little square dishes.
